Members of the PUD 3 Financial Service Department were singled out for praise from the Washington State Auditor’s Office during a recent evaluation by the state agency.

Mason County PUD No. 3’s financial management staff received good news Tuesday from the Washington State Auditor’s Office: PUD 3 passed its annual inspection by the Washington State Auditor’s Office with an exemplary evaluation. The report marked the 34th consecutive year in which the utility has received a clean bill of health from the state agency.

During a meeting Tuesday, following nearly a month of evaluation, officials with the State Auditor’s office were complimentary of the PUD, saying that it is a well-run organization with good internal controls.

“We received an unmodified opinion from the Washington State Auditor,” said Tom Farmer, PUD 3 commission chair. “To me that means a five star, gold plated rating. The fact that we saw no issues and had a positive report shows the professionalism and commitment of our entire staff to managing the valuable resources of our customers.”

The Washington State Auditor’s office focuses on two general areas during its auditing work. First, financial records are audited to ensure public funds are accounted for and controls are in place to protect public resources. Second, an accountability audit is conducted to make sure units of state and local government adhere to required laws and regulations relating to financial matters such as bidding and contracts.

The State Auditor’s Office regularly conducts audits of about 2,400 units of local government, including cities, counties, schools and special purpose districts such as ports and fire control districts.

Mason County PUD No. 3 is a locally controlled public utility that provides electricity to over 33,000 customers in most of Mason County and small portions of Kitsap, Pierce and Grays Harbor Counties. PUD 3 also provides wholesale telecommunications services through a fiber optic network. PUD 3 has won eight consecutive Government Finance Officers Association awards of excellence for its annual reports.
