Saint Martin’s University began the Dragon Boat Festival eight years ago as a way to promote cultural diversity and community togetherness. The popular festival is held annually at the Port of Olympia. This year, 32 teams competed in the dragon boat races. Each team contained up to 20 rowers.
Since no formal training is required, the dragon boat races attract community groups that wish to bond and develop a cohesive team. This year, 12 community teams participated in the races. The Washington Dragon Boat Association provides the boats and teams travel from around Puget Sound, Seattle and Portland to participate.
