Teens age 12 to 18 are invited to demonstrate their talent for creating comic or manga style illustrated short stories by entering an original graphic novel (or comic book) for a chance to win prizes and see their work in print. The contest, titled “Teen Create-Your-Own Graphic Novel Contest,” runs from January 14 through February 23.

The contest is part of Lacey Loves to Read (LL2R), a community reading initiative designed to generate the discussion and celebration of a notable author’s work. LL2R member organizations are North Thurston Public Schools, the City of Lacey, and Timberland Regional Library (TRL). The contest is being coordinated by the Lacey Timberland Library.

Entries will be accepted at the Lacey Timberland Library no later than 5 p.m. on February 23. Complete rules, entry forms and the prize list, as well as the graphic novel page templates, are on the TRL website,www.TRL.org.

Prizes will be awarded in two categories: Middle School/Jr. High (ages 12-14) and High School (ages 15-18). Entries will be judged on content and illustrations by a panel of Lacey Loves to Read committee members and local comic industry professionals.

First, second and third place winners in both categories will be awarded prizes. The first place winners will be provided 100 print copies of their winning entry and be given a release party in March at Olympic Cards & Comics in Lacey.

This year’s LL2R author is Jennifer L. Holm. Her two well-known graphic novel series for children, “Babymouse” and “Squish,” are the inspiration behind the contest. Holm also writes children’s and young adult novels, which have garnered her three Newbery Honor awards.
