Undoubtedly once December 25 passes, most Olympia residents start thinking about taking down their tree.  Sure, there are the traditionalists that leave it up, ringing in the New Year with lights twinkling.  But I start getting itchy to remove all holiday decorations beginning at 8am on December 26.  If your backyard is only suitable for composting a poinsettia, consider one of these options to recycle the central holiday decoration.  And, please remember to remove all ornaments, lights and tinsel before recycling your tree.  I know little Johnny will be sad if he doesn’t get to hang his homemade craft onto the tree next year.

Tree Recycling Pick Up Options

  • LeMay compost customers can cut their tree into three-foot sections and dispose of it in the regular compost cart.
  • City of Olympia garbage customers can put their tree out for pick-up on Saturday, January 5 (Thurs/Fri service) or Saturday, January 12 (Tues/Wed service).  Place the tree in your regular pick up spot.
  • City of Lacey residents are asked to put their tree to the curb by 8am on Saturday, January 5.
  • City of Tumwater residents can place their tree at the curb on Monday, January 7 by 8am for pick up.
  • Contact the local Boy Scout troop at 360.491.3214 for pick up information.

Live Tree

If you chose to purchase a live tree this year, take some tips from Thurston County Solid Waste on what to do post-holiday.

  • Provide a gradual transition for the tree from indoors to outdoors.
  • Let the tree spend a few days in a cool area protected from the wind, such as a garage, rather than abruptly planting it outdoors. This is especially desirable if the weather is extremely cold and windy.
