What’s the latest hot trend for fall color?—those in the know say it’s green! One of the hottest, hip trends today is the sustainability mantra of  “reduce-reuse-recycle,” and you too can be fashionably green this fall at the Secondhand Safari on Saturday, October 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Thurston County Fairgrounds.

Come buy, sell and trade your secondhand treasures at the fair’s annual fall garage sale event and keep usable secondhand goods out of the landfill. Bargains abound with over 100 vendors with thousands of books, furniture items, clothes, housewares and other secondhand treasures. Past Secondhand Safaris have brought 1,500 visitors, so avoid the crowds with early-bird admission for $2 from 8 to 9 a.m., and only $1 for admission after 9 a.m.

Learn even more about going green this fall from the Master Recycler Composter volunteers who will be on hand at the Secondhand Safari event to help sort trash, recyclables and compostable materials. Adult volunteers can get involved with the Master Recycler Composter program and help train and educate their friends, neighbors and co-workers with simple tips to go green and keep more waste out of our landfills. Learn more about the Master Recycler Composter program and other volunteer opportunities for adults and youth by visiting www.thurstonsolidwaste.org and clicking on “Volunteers.”

New this year at Secondhand Safari is the Warm Winter Wear and Coat Drive, where you can recycle the coats, gloves, hats and other winter gear your kids outgrew and help needy Thurston County kids served by Community Youth Services. Your tax-deductible donation can be made at the Community Youth Services booth from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and winter clothing donations will still be accepted from 1 to 3 p.m. in a collection box at the Community Youth Services booth.

Covered and outdoor booths are still available to groups or individuals looking to clean out the clutter and make a tidy sum. The 10×10 foot booths are $25 for an uncovered slot and $40 for a covered slot. Set up for sellers will be on Friday, October 5 from noon to 10 p.m. The doors will be locked after set up Friday evening and security will be on-site until the event opens Saturday.

Representatives from community groups, non-profits, businesses, agencies and individuals working on sustainability issues are invited to sign up for an educational booth or display. Contact the Fair Office at (360) 786-5453 for details.

Representatives from Goodwill Industries will be on hand throughout the day to accept donations (at their discretion), giving sellers the chance to donate any of their unsold items at the end of the day.
