Mike Johnson, 2011 winner of the fishing derby, displays his 33 pound salmon.

The South Sound Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers (SSPSA) will launch the first South Sound Salmon Derby in marine areas 11 and 13 south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on Saturday, Aug.18. The homeport for the derby will be Port of Olympia’s Swantown Marina.

Derby prizes include cash awards to the first, second and third place winners. Fourth through tenth place derby contenders also win various fishing tackle and boating products. The award festivities, barbecue dinner and raffle will be from 5-7 p.m. at Swantown Marina.

Tickets are $25 and are available at Sportsman’s Warehouse, Sportco, Verle’s Sports Center or online. Fishing will be open from dawn to 4 p.m. A free Kids Derby will also be included as part of the event.

Four regional derbies including the South Sound Salmon Derby are part of the 14-event Northwest Salmon Derby Series. The Northwest Marine Trade Association sponsors the series to promote boating in the Puget Sound region. Participants in a series derby also are entered in a drawing to win an outfitted 21-foot River Hawk Boat.

The SSPSA has held successful derbies in Hood Canal eleven years running. This year the membership felt a South Sound Derby in the Olympia / Lacey area was long overdue.
