South Puget Sound Community College sophomore Anye Turner signed a national letter of intent to continue his hoops career next fall with Western Washington University.

Turner, a 6-7 forward who earned Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) All-Western Region first-team honors last season, averaged 15.3 points to go with NWAACC-leading totals of 11.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots per game. Turner was also named the Western Region’s Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for his work in leading the Clippers to an unlikely berth at the NWAACC tournament, where they nearly fell two higher-seeded opponents.

South Puget Sound Athletic Director Pam Charpentier said Turner will be missed for more than his on-court accolades.

“I am very happy for the opportunity Anye has been given to be part of Western Washington University’s men’s basketball program,” Charpentier said. “He has been a great student and athlete for Clipper Athletics. We will miss his hard work, leadership and team-first attitude. I wish him the best as he continues his collegiate basketball experience at WWU.”

In addition to his league accolades, Turner was named a team captain, and was selected team MVP. As a senior at Black Hills High School, Turner led the Wolves to the Class 2A state tournament, the first appearance in school history.

Turner joins a Western Washington Vikings team that won the NCAA Division II National Championship last year. On Oct. 27, WWU will travel to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke University in an exhibition game.
