New children’s book brings the fun to urban farming

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new book by two northwest authors is hitting the shelves early this spring, and shining a light on the joys, and trials, of raising backyard chickens.

The Chicken and the Dog” is based on the true story of two urban chickens, who share their backyard with a black Labrador retriever in Olympia. The authors, Andre and Amanda Maxwell, wrote the story after raccoons broke into their coop one night and stole away with their beloved Rhode Island Red chicken.

Beautifully illustrated by Portland-grown artist, Jill Carter, the book offers amusing details that follow the adventures of the chicken and the dog as they stand up to a gang of wily neighborhood raccoons.

The books are available for pre-order, and will be available in a number of retail stores across the northwest. To order a book, visit www.chickenandthedog.com.

The Chicken and the Dog team is also currently raising funds via Kickstarter.com, a platform for creative projects. Their goal is to raise enough funds to print more books, market and distribute it regionally, make books available in multiple languages and create electronic versions with games and activities for kids.

Donors will receive special rewards for their pledge, including first-edition autographed copies of the book and invitations to the book release party, to be held in Olympia.
