Lacey, WA Kumon, the world’s largest after-school math and reading enrichment program opens a center in Lacey at 7221 Martin Way East (near the cross street of Ranger Drive). The Lacey Chamber of Commerce invites the public to attend the new business Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Event with Mayor Virgil Clarkson on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 4-6 p.m. and to meet local educator and entrepreneur, Andrew Taber of Kumon of Lacey.

Kumon’s individualized approach helps children progress by ability rather than age or grade. In the U.S., 200,000 students from preschool to high school are developing their math and reading skills independently and gaining confidence through Kumon’s Method of Learning.  The Kumon Center of Lacey joins the more than 1,300 U.S. instructors committed to helping children excel through the ability-based program.

“At Kumon, we believe children have unlimited potential to succeed,” said small business owner, Instructor Andrew Taber. “My goal is to help each child develop strong academic skills, a love of learning and the confidence to excel beyond the classroom. My wife and I were Kumon parents for eight years prior to opening this branch in Lacey.  We truly love this program and enjoy sharing it with other families.”

In a recent report, “Teaching Math to the Talented,” published in Education Next, American students were significantly outperformed by 33 countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Finland. America’s lack of advanced students impacts the country’s future economic growth and that’s why Taber cares deeply about helping City students in his after-school enrichment program. More than half of U.S. Kumon students study advanced math, and 24 percent of these students are learning materials two to three years above their grade level.

Taber saw his own daughter and son develop a love of learning in Kumon, as well as discipline, accuracy, and mastery. As a result of Taber’s children’s success, he was inspired to open his own franchise.  Prior to opening Kumon of Lacey, Taber spent seven years teaching English at high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in Japan.

Kumon of Lacey class hours are: Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Students study for approximately a half-hour per subject at 7221 Martin Way East, Olympia, 98516, and have short assignments to complete at home.
