Thurston County Emergency Operations Center Activates

Olympia- Thurston County’s Emergency Center is open and officials are monitoring the winter storm that has hit the region.  Several inches of new snow fell overnight on top of snow and ice received the past couple of days.  Emergency Management Coordinator Sandy Johnson says they are keeping an eye on the situation.  “There’s not really much we can do to provide overall assistance at this time, but we are tracking the storm and assisting the Thurston County Roads Division as they work to clear the main roads in the unincorporated areas of the county.”  Meanwhile, all offices and departments of Thurston County government are closed today due to the weather.  That includes District, Superior and Family and Juvenile Courts, Public Health and Social Services and the Waste and Recovery Center.

Roads crews are out in force today with snow plows and sanding trucks.  The priority is to keep the main arterial roadways open. It will not be possible for crews to clear neighborhood streets and smaller roadways.  As a reminder, county residents are asked NOT to drive unless they absolutely have to.  If you have to go out, make sure the windows of your vehicle are completely clear and you have emergency supplies with you.  You should allow extra time to get to your destination.  Most accidents in this type of weather are caused by driving too fast for the conditions.

A reminder NOT to run generators or gas or charcoal grills and hibachis in an enclosed space, even in a garage.  They could cause a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gases which can be fatal.  If you have to use a portable home generator, read and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Never try to power house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet. This can lead to electrocuting utility workers or neighbors served by the same transformer.
