Emergency Management Drill Planned for the Thurston County Courthouse

OLYMPIA – Offices of Thurston County government will be briefly closed on April 4th and April 7th for a special emergency preparedness drill.  The closures are to allow county officials and employees to conduct a “lockdown” drill.  A lockdown is where employees lock themselves in offices and would be used when Emergency Management advises, in the case of a gas leak or similar event, or when law enforcement has advised that a dangerous person is in the vicinity.  These drills have been in the planning stages for many months and are done occasionally so employees will know what to do to protect courthouse visitors and themselves in a real incident.

Certain county employees will be located inside and outside the buildings to assist the public during the drill, which will last about ten minutes.  Citizens in the courthouse at the time of the drill will be asked whether they want to stay and participate or come back upon completion. An announcement will be made to both visitors and employees just prior to the start of the drill.

The drills will be held the following dates and times-

Monday April 4, 2011
Building #1:                            (1:00 pm)
Building #2:                            (1:00 pm)
Building #3 (District Court):  (1:00 pm)
Building #4:                            (2:30 pm)
Heritage Court:                       (2:30 pm)
Assigned Counsel:                  (2:30 pm)

Thursday April 7, 2011
Juvenile and Family Court:          (1:00 pm)
Public Health & Social Services: (2:00 pm)

The drills are part of Disaster Preparedness Month as declared by the Governor and by Thurston County Commissioners.  This is a statewide effort held each April to encourage citizens to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools.
