At 0704 this morning, the Olympia Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at 1218 West Bay Drive.  The initial calling party reported seeing fire from an unknown building on West Bay Drive.  While en route, the Battalion Chief upgraded the fire response to a second and then third alarm.  A Third alarm means that many of the fire districts and departments within Thurston County are requested for mutual aid.

Initial arriving crews reported heavy smoke and flames visible on the south side of the warehouse.  Crews were able to knock down the primary fire within 30 minutes.  At this time, the fire continues to smolder within concealed spaces.  Firefighters have been instructed to fight the fire from outside the structure due to the possibility of structural collapse.  Fire units will stay on scene throughout the day and evening.

For the past several weeks the City has been working with the building owner, West Bay Reliable LLC, on a demolition plan for this building complex.  It was last used for metal tank fabrication and storage.

This fire response included all Olympia Fire Department Companies, Mutual Aid Fire Companies from Fire Districts  3, 8, 9, 13, and Tumwater Fire Department.  Total fire companies on scene included 10 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, 4 Medic Units, and 1 support unit.  Additionally, assistance has been provided by Thurston County Dispatch, Olympia Public Works, Olympia Police, Harbor Patrol and Intercity Transit.

No injuries to any firefighters have been reported. For further information, contact PIO, Assistant Fire Chief Greg Wright 360.239.2797 or Olympia Fire Department 360.753.8348.
